Alleged anti-competitive agreement between a number of telecommunications network operators
The Director General of Telecommunications has investigated whether an alleged anti-competitive agreement to refuse to supply the interconnection services to BT Ignite necessary for it to provide its Multimedia Voice over Internet Protocol (MMVoIP) service infringes the Competition Act 1998.
BT Ignite complained to the Director that a number of operators had agreed together not to open the 0551 number range allocated to BT Ignite, preventing it from marketing or selling its MMVoIP service.
The Director has now completed his investigation. As the Operators have all either opened the 0551 number range on their networks, or expressed their willingness to do so if contacted by BT, the Director considers that there is no anti-competitive agreement and has therefore decided to close this case.
