The joint OFT and local authority Trading Standards Services (TSS) Scamnesty campaign raised awareness of scams by encouraging people to drop their scam mailings into local Scamnesty collection bins located around the country. The campaign ran from 1 to 26 February 2010.
Mass marketed scams are a problem in the UK. They can take the form of bogus and fraudulent offers sent by post, telephone or email. Fake lottery and prize draw wins, bogus psychic predictions, get rich quick investment cons and miracle health cures are just some of the tricks used by scammers. Nearly half of the UK adult population has been targeted by a scam, and more than three million adults - one in 15 people - fall victim to scams, losing a total of £3.5 billion every year. The Scamnesty campaign was part of the OFT's ongoing work to build awareness of scams.
This year, Scamnesty's online presence was increased to raise awareness of email and website scams. Campaign pages featured on Consumer Direct's website and included an ebin for sending scam emails to, and a bin locator - allowing people to search for their nearest Scamnesty bins by postcode.
The campaign has now finished and the evaluation will be available on this page in June.
