No. ME/1030/03
11 December 2003
Under the undertakings given by Wm Morrison plc (Morrison) to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry on 8 December 2003, in the event that Morrison acquires Safeway plc (Safeway), Morrison is required to divest certain stores to acquirers approved by the OFT to address the local adverse effects identified by the Competition Commission.
After having considered new and additional representations and consulted with the parties, the OFT has decided today that, if Morrison acquires Safeway, it will not be required to divest a store in Towcester. Morrison will therefore only be required to divest 52 stores, if it acquires Safeway.
