Summary

The OFT has reviewed and updated its statement of consumer protection enforcement principles. The OFT reviews the document annually. This statement replaces the one published in March 2010 but does not differ materially from that version. The Statement of Enforcement Principles explains:

  • the OFT's approach to promoting business compliance with consumer protection law
  • when it is necessary to use enforcement action to achieve compliance to protect consumers and the types of interventions we use
  • how we do this to ensure enforcement activities are carried out in a way that is transparent, accountable, proportionate, consistent, and targeted only at cases where action is needed.

Annexe A lists the of consumer protection legislation that gives the OFT its enforcement duties and powers.

The OFT has undertaken to review its statement of consumer protection enforcement principles on an annual basis. This statement replaces the one published in December 2008.
