How were the resources developed?

Developed by the Office of Fair Trading and LLU+ at London South Bank University, Skilled to go is the OFT's primary consumer education tool. It was launched in June 2008 and aims to give consumers the skills and knowledge to function confidently, effectively and responsibly when buying goods and services.

The OFT commissioned LLU+ to design the educational content, which was then piloted in a range of contexts and settings with 16-18 year old and adult learners. Details of this and other research projects can be found on the Research page.

The resources are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure their effectiveness through suitability to the intended audience and accuracy of legal terms and examples.

Why do I need to register?

Skilled to go is a free education toolkit, but the registration process is nevertheless important to us as it allows us to keep track of how many people have viewed the resources, the range of interested audiences, where it is most widely used and how people hear about us.

By gathering email addresses upon registration, we are able to keep our users in the loop with news and updates. If you change your email address, you can either re-register with your new details which we will consolidate against your existing information on our system, or email toolkitupdate@oft.gsi.gov.uk to let us know your new email address.

What’s in a Skilled to go toolkit?

Content within a toolkit is arranged into modules which focus on a particular consumer topic. Modules are broken into:

  • Setting the context activities - to introduce the module theme
  • Two to four units of activities - focussing on a particular module theme
  • End of module activities - to revise and bring together the main module concepts.

A set of nine appendices (link) are available to use across all modules and toolkits, which are mainly helpful templates applicable to different lessons. Where appendices are most relevant, you will be signposted to them in the Teachers' notes.

Teachers' notes, the User guide and the Financial learning guide are all stored in the Teacher support documents folder within each module.

What are the main teacher support documents?

The main documents that support the delivery of Skilled to go are:

  • Teachers' notes
  • User guide / Curriculum mapping guide
  • Financial learning guide

You can find out more about these documents in the Skilled to go Glossary.

How is downloadable content organised?

There are two possible download options.

1. Download ready-to-go packs, including teachers notes and curriculum references for a particular activity and all activity parts. This is most suitable for teachers looking for a one-off lesson.

2. Download module components separately, including:

  • a complete set of Teachers' notes which include suggestions for delivery and consumer information for teachers for each module
  • a complete User guide that provides background information on Skilled to go and full curriculum references
  • individual files that make up an activity (e.g. Activity 1a Game board, Activity 1b Game cards, etc)

This is particularly helpful for teachers planning to teach whole modules or several lessons from the materials.

Can I edit the resources?

Teachers tell us that one of the main benefits of the Skilled to go resources is that they can be easily adapted.

All downloads are available in Word or Excel format, which means you can save them to your computer, edit the language, numbers or images, and create new versions.

This allows you to tailor the materials to the age, ability and interests of your group.
