Application hints and tips

Your application

All OFT vacancies are advertised on Civil Service Jobs and your application must be submitted through this site. Civil Service Jobs includes comprehensive guidance for candidates and a candidate helpline. However, if you need to contact us please email recruitment@oft.gsi.gov.uk.

The application process

All applications must be submitted through Civil Service Jobs. All correspondence will be sent to your personal Communication Centre so you are advised to check the progress of your application regularly.

An indicative timescale will be included in the information available on Civil Service Jobs. We aim to shortlist all applications within two weeks of the closing date - although it is often far quicker than this. Normally, we would have a single interview but a second interview might sometimes be required. The selection process is likely to include an assessment and details will be provided where necessary.

Security clearance

Please note that there are a few roles at the Office of Fair Trading which require a higher level of security clearance. You will be advised if this applies to you.

All Government Departments are required to carry out basic security checks before recruiting new staff. These checks are to ensure that before an offer of employment is made the following four requirements have been met:

  • a candidate's identity has been established. Candidates called for interview are required to bring proof of identity with them. Further details will be provided where necessary
  • recent employment details have been confirmed
  • there are no restrictions to the candidate living or working in the UK
  • details of any unspent convictions have been declared.

These processes are all carried out under the principles of the Data Protection Act. Only relevant and sufficient information is requested, it is treated in the strictest confidence and will not be kept for any longer than is necessary. Refusing to provide any of the information requested will be a factor taken into consideration in any employment decision.

Please note that there are a few roles at the Office of Fair Trading which require a higher level of security clearance. You will be advised if this applies to you.

The information you provide will not be seen by the Selection Panel, nor will it affect the selection process.
