On 12 October 2011 the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) held a roundtable discussion on the evolution of the professions market since the OFT's 2001 report on Competition in Professions.
The key objective of the event was to outline some of the outstanding challenges of, and approaches to, the liberalisation of professions and consumer empowerment as a way of enhancing economic growth. The event also marked the introduction of Alternative Business Structures on 6 October 2011, a development the OFT's 2001 report had advocated for.
The event began with a keynote speech by Philip Collins, Chairman of the OFT, who provided an update on the OFT's work since the 2001 report on Competition in Professions. Download a copy of the speech (pdf 63kb).
The speech was followed by a debate on issues relating to the impact of liberalisation of professions on economic growth and methods for empowering consumers. The audience consisted of senior representatives and experts from a number of regulators, consumer bodies, government and academia.
