Simon Priddis and Ali Nikpay have been appointed as the two Senior Directors in the OFT's Competition Enforcement Division.
Simon, currently Director of Mergers, has been promoted to the post of Senior Director of Competition Casework. He will have day-to-day oversight of how cases are prioritized (which ones are taken forward and how) and making sure they are properly planned and resourced.
Ali, currently Director of Competition Policy Coordination, has been appointed as Senior Director of Case Scrutiny and Policy. He will be responsible for ensuring the robustness of our casework output and for policy. The role will include leading the case review process for both competition and merger cases, in particular through chairing case review and oral representations meetings.
They will both report to Vincent Smith, Director of Competition Enforcement and they will also deputise for him.
The changes to the Competition Enforcement Division are part of the OFT's ongoing work to improve the effectiveness of competition work. The division is being reorganized to improve the direction of casework and to support better the delivery of results consistent with the OFT's overall enforcement strategy and priorities.
NOTES
1. The OFT is the main competition enforcement body in the UK, with sole responsibility for enforcing competition law in 93 per cent of the UK economy. It enforces cartel and other anti-trust law (both under the Competition Act and acts against individuals under the Enterprise Act cartel offence) and it is the UK's first stage merger control authority.
2. Simon has been Director of Mergers at the OFT since 2002. He joined the OFT from private legal practice focusing on competition law in Brussels and Washington DC. Simon will take up his new post on 1 September.
3. Ali has been Director of Competition Policy Coordination since 2004. He joined the OFT from law firm Clifford Chance and before that he worked at DG Comp.
4. The OFT will advertise for a new Director of Mergers as soon as possible.
