OFT appoints two new Executive Directors

The OFT has announced the appointment of Clive Maxwell and Robert Laslett as Executive Directors to lead the delivery of work across competition and consumer policy.

Clive is currently on secondment from the Treasury to the OFT, as Senior Director, Services group. His most recent role at the Treasury was as Director, Financial Stability, including leading on a number of responses to the financial crisis. Prior to this his roles have involved extensive experience of business-facing issues, regulation and European policy.

Robert is currently Director for Private Pensions and Chief Analyst at the Department for Work and Pensions. This includes policy oversight of private pensions and supervision of the public bodies responsible for protecting and regulating occupational pension schemes. Previous roles have included Vice President at economic consultants Charles River Associates, Director of London Economics Ltd and positions at the World Bank, Washington.

'Clive and Robert bring huge senior leadership expertise and experience which includes oversight of financial markets and advising on economics and policy. As the UK faces up to significant economic challenges, the role of the OFT in ensuring competition and consumer policy help drive national economic growth is more important than ever. These appointments will further strengthen the OFT's ability to make markets work well in the interests of both consumers and the wider economy.'

NOTES

Both posts were externally advertised. The appointments were made from within the Civil Service. Clive Maxwell's starting date will be 1 September 2010 and Robert Laslett's starting date will be 6 August 2010. The Consumer Minister, Edward Davey, has appointed Clive and Robert to the OFT Board.
Initially Clive Maxwell will lead the work of the Services, Goods and Mergers groups. Robert Laslett will lead the Cartels, Infrastructure and Consumer Market groups. The Policy group will report into both.
The OFT currently has three Executive Director posts (equivalent to Director General in Ministerial departments). These are currently held by Vivienne Dews, Executive Director, Corporate Services, and by Jonathan May who is retiring in the summer. Jonathan is Executive Director, Policy and Strategy but has also been covering the post of Executive Director, Markets and Projects since 2008.
