OFT Consumer Credit Register goes online
99/08 21 August 2008
The OFT has launched an online version of its public register, making it quicker and easier for businesses and consumers to search information held on the Consumer Credit Register.
View the Consumer Credit Register.
The Consumer Credit Register currently has details of over 125,000 Consumer Credit Licence holders. Most businesses that offer goods or services on credit, lend money to consumers or provide debt solutions and advice to consumers must be licensed by the OFT.
The Consumer Credit Register provides details of applications for, and holders of, consumer credit licences, both past and present. It also gives details of OFT decisions to refuse an application or revoke a consumer credit licence, as well as information relating to any appeal against these decisions.
The Consumer Credit Bulletin is also available online and provides details of licensing decisions on a week by week basis. The Bulletin allows readers to search for weekly changes to the register by criteria such as local authority area or postcode.
Ray Watson, OFT Director Consumer Credit, said:
'The online register gives consumers and businesses direct access to important information about the credit businesses they deal with. Anyone can use the register to check whether the business is licensed by the OFT to offer credit, the type of activities covered by the licence and the authorised trading names and main business of the licence holder.'
NOTES
1. Under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 the OFT has a statutory duty to make information about applicants and applications available through a Public Register. The OFT will continue to offer its telephone and correspondence service with OFT staff searching the data and then passing it onto enquirers.
2. Every effort has been made before to ensure that the information on the online register is accurate. Any information which appears to be incorrect or omitted should be reported to the OFT at enquiries@oft.gov.uk. Please note: the OFT can only make certain changes when notified by the licence holder or an authorised representative.
